The North Loop area, also known as the Warehouse District, comprises the hip and happening downtown area of Minneapolis. Minneapolis is unique among many cities that seemingly become a ghost town after work in that in the North Loop area, there is always something happening, particularly at night. The North Loop area has one of the largest, most eclectic groups of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs found everywhere. And many people, notably those who are upwardly mobile, in their 20s and 30s, just love living there, and in many cases working there as well.
And for sports fans, the North Loop is heaven. Both the Minnesota Twins traverse the bases at the Target Field and the Minnesota Timberwolves play center court at the Target Center to play professional basketball.
Both the Target Field and the Target Center are known to attract exciting, big-time concerts and then there is the Fillmore, a 36,000 square feet concert and entertainment center that imitates the famed Fillmore in San Francisco.
Only about 4,000 people are living in the North Loop as the area is still primarily used by restaurants, computer start-ups, and professional companies.
There are virtually no single-family homes. It either lives in a converted warehouse loft or lives in one of the many high-rise buildings that dot the landscape. The North Loop community is one of the most diverse in Minnesota, with only about 77 percent of the community being white. And as the majority of the residents are young, educated, and very tolerant (yes, the North Loop does have a number of gay-oriented bars,) this is one of the most liberal and open communities in the city.
If you want to live in the North Loop area, do bring plenty of money because as you might imagine, living downtown is expensive. You will not find many people living in the North Loop that make less than $75,000 per year, and many have salaries of between $100,000 and $200,000 per year. West Bloomington is a similar area in terns of earnings.
And one advantage of living in the North Loop is that most things are within walking distance.
There are problems, however, to living in the North Loop. One of them is obtaining groceries. Yes, there are Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and aLunds, but the grocery stores are spread out and tend to be expensive.
A second problem, if you are not lucky enough to work in downtown Minneapolis, is that
commuting to any of the outlying communities can be a nightmare. Seems there is always plenty of traffic going outwardly. Also, shopping is generally limited to small shops. There is no Mall of America Clone
in downtown Minneapolis.A second problem is schools. There are public schools in the North Loop, so unless you want to send your kids to an expensive private school, plan on them spending extra time on the school bus.
But for the young, the hip, and the affluent, the North Loop is the only place to live in Minneapolis.
