The South Loop District of Bloomington covers the area between 1-494, the Minnesota River on the South and the East, and Minnesota State Highway 77. The famed Mall of America sits exactly on the South Loop District, and the South Loop District is merely 1.6 miles from the Minneapolis Airport, one of the busiest, global, and international airports in the country.
But plenty of people do live in the South Loop District, and City of Bloomington officials project a doubling of growth from a little over 2,000 to 4,000 by the year 2030. Single-family homes, unfortunately, are fairly rare in the South Loop, with residents contenting themselves with living in apartments or one and two-bedroom condominiums.
There are plenty of apartments, with some ultra-modern apartment buildings as well as a healthy dose of older buildings. The principal advantages of living in the South Loop are that there are plenty of jobs and as the South Loop District is not overly large, there is not a long commute to get to work for most. There are some disadvantages to living in the South Loop District, however. The Penn-American area is nearby as a plus.
The first is that the South Loop District is one of the most crowded areas in Minneapolis to live in. Except for the nature preserve, you definitely will not feel you are enjoying the wide-open spaces. The second is the traffic. The South Loop district seems to be always crowded with cars no matter the time of the day. So for example, a 1.6-mile jaunt to the airport will likely take you around five minutes to get there.
And with plenty of traffic, the noise level will also rise. So the South Loop is not the most restful of districts. Finally, while almost everything is here, plan on doing a commute to travel to the grocery store unless you don't mind shopping at a convenience store. As you might expect, you will also find fewer families living in the South Loop, and it's definitely oriented toward the under 30 crowds.
However, if you are a young, urban hipster, the South Loop has everything you will ever need for restaurants, entertainment, and shopping. And the jobs are indeed plentiful. The South Loop is not the most restful place to live in the Minneapolis area, but it certainly is vibrant, particular for those who live an on-the-go lifestyle.
