At the Western Edge of Bloomington is the Normandale Lake District. The Normandale Lake District may be defined as an integrated collection of housing, natural resources, and commercial development (mostly medium high-rise office buildings, all put together.
The Normandale Lake District is probably the City of Bloomington's most planned area. The city began drafting the Normandale Lake District plans in 2008. Located just South of Interstate I-494, Normandale Lake is the centerpiece of the district, a shallow, man-made lake that was converted from wetlands in the 1970s.
The Normandale Lake Office Park is by far the most expensive piece of property in the Twin Cities, valued at well over $279 million, for the five-building park. Yes, there are homes, as well as townhouses spread throughout the Normandale Lake District, but they do tend to be a bit pricey, and as of 2014 at least, the City of Bloomington reported only around 438 people live in the Normandale Lake District.
Since the City reported that only 243 people lived in the district just 6 years earlier, this is certainly an area that is growing slowly in population. It would appear from real estate sites that the vast majority of the over 5,000 workers who choose to live in the Normandale Lake District, live in one of around 10 major apartment complexes.
There are two major drawbacks to living in the Normandale Lake District.
One is that there is very little shopping, restaurants, or grocery stores. Almost all of these require a commute outside, although being close to I-494, the commute is not
lengthy.
The second thing is the costs. Studios run from around $1400 to $1700 for a studio apartment, (in most of Minneapolis, you can find a studio for around $850 ) and run up to nearly $5000 per month for a 3-bedroom studio apartment.
Granted, these apartments tend to be top-of-the-line, but they are expensive.
However, since the vast majority of the people living in the Normandale Lake District work locally, one great advantage is that as far as crime is concerned, the Normandale Lake District is about as safe as you can get.
If you can afford it and don't mind the inconveniences of traveling for shopping, groceries, and restaurants. the Normandale Lake District is a very easy place to live and enjoy peace of mind. Also check out The South Loop.
